Sgt. Dennis Short of the 4th Combat Engineers emerges from a hut with an AK-47 during a sweep on an island in the Tigris River in Iraq. Fort Carson GIs allowed the woman who lived there to keep the assault rifle for protection but confiscated a machine gun. They have been allowing each household to keep one firearm for protection. The 3rd Brigade Combat Team on Wednesday began a sweep of the entire city of Samarra to flush out insurgents who’ve been attacking them regularly with mortar fire.

Members of the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion patrol an inlet on the Tigris River in Samarra, Iraq, on Wednesday morning. Boats from what has been dubbed the "Vanguard Yacht Club" have been helping to put an end to mortar fire aimed at U.S. troops from the city's center.

Trudging through vegetation, U.S. troops make a sweep along the banks of the Tigris River. One Iraqi woman had praise for the Americans. "With your help," she tells them, "I hope we never get hurt again." Soldiers have been reassuring Iraqis that they have nothing to fear from the fighter jets that fly overhead.

George Kando, a translator for the 4th Combat Engineers who grew up in Iraq, talks with Iraqi farmers who had assault rifles along the Tigris River Wednesday.

A Bedouin man is questioned about mortar fire being directed at U.S. troops from the Iraqi city of Samarra. Members of the Fort Carson-based 1-8 Infantry began encircling the holy Muslim city on Wednesday, closing off all access — and possible escape routes — as they do so.

Sgt. Matthews of the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion is soaked by spray while riding in a patrol boat on the Tigris River. Their mission is to flush out insurgents and capture weapons caches. In one encounter, U.S. troops halted a boat carrying two Iraqi men. With guns trained on them, one of the men gingerly bent down, then held aloft a plastic bag containing their reason for being on the water — fish.

Staff Sgt. Ahmad Matthews patrols the Tigris River by boat with fellow members of the 4th Combat Engineers.

Spc. Jeremy Evans, 26, mans a squad assault weapon while riding in a boat along the Tigris River at dawn.

Iraqi girls wait outside their family's hut as U.S. troops conduct searches along the Tigris River on Wednesday. Two rifles were found, but only one was confiscated. Lt. Col. Laura Loftus, commander of the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, said, "We are going to find out exactly who's been doing the shooting."

Sgt. Sakari Bryant hands out chewing gum to Iraqi girls while members of his squad search their property.

Pfc. Kenneth Curtner, 18, wakes up Wednesday afternoon in a boat along the Tigris River after patrols.

Pfc. Brandon Burmeister, 20, a communications specialist, sets up a mosquito net at the "Vanguard Yacht Club" along the Tigris River Wednesday night.
