Sgt. Boyce Harrington, a member of the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, which works in unison with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, plays with a puppy he named Bear after he found the animal Tuesday while on patrol in Al Dujail, Iraq. Harrington couldn't keep the dog, so he gave it to local children.

An prisoner of war sits in a camp Tuesday after members of the 1/8 Infantry performed a massive raid, netting small arms, IEDs and a high-ranking member of the Iraqi insurgency outside Samarra.

Spc. Anthony Carbone, center, of the 1-8 Infantry, guards Iraqi prisoners during processing. "We wanted to catch them while they were sleeping, and we just about did," says Lt. Col. Nate Sassaman, who commands the 1-8 Infantry. An informant provided details that set the raid in motion.

An Iraqi prisoner, one of nearly 60 captured in an early morning raid Monday on a farmhouse on the outskirts of Samarra, sits inside a razor-wire enclosure. Members of the 1-8 Infantry, part of Fort Carson's 3rd Brigade Combat Team, also confiscated mortar rounds, C-4 explosives, rolls of detonation cord, blasting caps and small arms. The highest-ranking Iraqi taken into custody was Quais Hitem, one of Saddam Hussein's top lieutenants.

A soldier identified only as Capt. Capobianco, right, imitates a well-publicized photo of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein that showed him with a rifle in one hand, pointed skyward. In this case, the rifle was captured by U.S. troops in a raid on one of Saddam's henchmen and his cohorts.
